Why donate Whole Blood?

When most people think of “donating blood” they usually think about the regular whole blood donation, which is when you donate a pint of blood. After donation, your whole blood is separated into several different individual components (red cells, plasma, and platelets). Those components are what we send to local hospitals to be transfused to local patients. We need to see about 200 donors total each day to keep up with the local need.

Appointment Durations

A whole blood donation (from check-in to refreshments) takes about 45 minutes to an hour, though the actual blood donation period only lasts about 15-30 minutes.

Why donate Double Red?

'Double Red' blood donation allows you to give twice the red cells in half the time. Using the same apheresis technology as platelet donations, red blood cells are drawn while the rest of your blood components are returned to your body. Double Red cells can be donated every 16 weeks, and the process only takes about 35 minutes to complete! We need to see about 200 donors total each day in order to keep up with the local need.

Why donate Platelets?

Platelets are the type of blood cell that allow our bodies to form clots—they essentially help people control their bleeding. Many patients across Central Texas, especially cancer & burn patients, rely on frequent platelet donations for recovery.

Platelet donations are made using a different machine than whole blood donations—it's called an apheresis machine. Whereas whole blood donations take approximately 45-60 minutes, platelet donations can take up to three hours to complete. We have television, movies, music, and WiFi to keep you occupied while you donate!
